Competency standards serve as a tool for aligning work perceptions through a collective sensemaking process in which stakeholders construct shared meaning. An effective competency model features a limited number of competencies, clear definitions, and specific behavioral indicators. Participatory development fosters a sense of ownership and enhances adoption. Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales translate abstract competencies into observable behaviors, improving inter-rater reliability. Socialization and training, particularly the exemplary leadership of top managers, are predictors of successful implementation. Integrating competency standards across all HR processes creates a competency-driven environment that accelerates the formation of shared meaning. Continuous evaluation and refinement are necessary to maintain the model’s relevance. Without proper interpretation, competency standards will become neglected administrative documents.
