Abstract

Household consumption patterns are not solely determined by income constraints but also shaped by cultural values that filter preferences and spending priorities. This study aims to construct a theoretical framework explaining how income and cultural values jointly influence family consumption behavior. The analysis identifies twelve mediating mechanisms including intergenerational value conflict, trust in financial institutions, remittance pressure, peer influence, religiosity, gender ideology, ecological awareness, debt tolerance, and post materialism. Results show that income elasticity for status goods is lower in collectivist societies, while mastery values strengthen the link between income and positional consumption. Religious households allocate larger proportions for spiritual expenditures even at low income levels. Digital transformation and climate awareness create new value orientations that alter traditional income consumption relationships. The study concludes that cultural values operate as filters that direct additional income toward specific consumption categories rather than simply increasing overall expenditure. Policy interventions aimed at poverty alleviation must incorporate local value mapping to avoid misdirected assistance. Future longitudinal research should track value shifts and corresponding consumption changes in the same households over time.
