Abstract

The process of developing core competencies that are difficult to imitate begins with the identification of resources that are valuable, rare, difficult to imitate, and irreplaceable, according to the resource-based view. Core competencies are formed through the conversion of tacit and explicit knowledge within the SECI model’s knowledge spiral. Cross-functional integration through cross-functional teams and coordination mechanisms is a prerequisite for the development of cross-functional competencies. Leadership plays a role in creating a vision, allocating resources, and building a collective learning culture. Dynamic capabilities enable the renewal of core competencies as the environment changes. Isolation mechanisms such as path dependency, causal ambiguity, and social complexity protect competencies from imitation. Core rigidity occurs when core competencies become a barrier to innovation. The ability to simultaneously exploit and explore expertise—known as ambidexterity—is the key to long-term success.
