Abstract

Gender differences in work life balance stem from unequal domestic labor division where women perform two to three times more unpaid household work than men even when working full time. This double burden creates more intensive role conflict for women who constantly switch between professional and domestic responsibilities. Social constructions of work life balance within cultural and organizational norms often fail to recognize this pre existing inequality. The COVID 19 pandemic widened gender gaps as school closures placed childcare and homeschooling responsibilities overwhelmingly on women while men working from home reported increased productivity from reduced commuting. Masculinity norms prevent men from taking larger roles in childcare despite younger generations expressing more egalitarian attitudes. Mandatory father quotas in parental leave policies have proven effective in increasing male participation and reducing stigma. Workplace flexibility without addressing domestic inequality can worsen women's conditions by making them always available for household tasks. Partner support constitutes the strongest factor determining women's ability to achieve satisfying work life balance. Generational differences show positive trends with younger men more willing to share domestic work, but policy changes and organizational practices must catch up to these attitude shifts. Sustainable work life balance requires redistributing domestic work and redesigning organizational policies to recognize gendered experiences.
