Abstract

Employee training and development represent a substantial investment for organizations seeking better performance and stronger competitiveness. This study examines how training programs contribute to performance improvement and how this contribution supports innovation and competitiveness. A qualitative literature review method was used following a systematic approach to identify, evaluate, and synthesize findings from multiple studies. The analysis identifies several key determinants of training effectiveness including accurate needs assessment, appropriate delivery methods, trainee characteristics, workplace support, and strategic alignment. Training for routine performance requires structured methods with clear procedures, while training for innovation requires open ended methods that encourage exploration and tolerate mistakes. Evaluation of training must extend beyond participant satisfaction to measure learning, behavior change, and organizational results using rigorous designs with control groups. Organizations that combine training with selective recruitment, fair performance appraisal, competitive compensation, and a strong learning culture achieve higher returns on their training investment. The speed of organizational learning becomes a source of competitive advantage when training builds self directed learning capabilities and cross functional collaboration skills. Practical recommendations include conducting needs analysis before designing training, using blended delivery methods, establishing post training support mechanisms, and evaluating training using rigorous designs.
