Abstract

Servant leadership is a philosophy in which leaders prioritize the needs of team members over their own personal interests. Characteristics of servant leadership include listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to others’ growth, and community building. Team effectiveness encompasses output quality, process conditions, and member experience. Servant leadership influences team effectiveness through psychological empowerment and trust. The psychological safety fostered by servant leadership encourages learning and innovative behavior. The relationship between servant leadership and team effectiveness is moderated by task type, team size, and national culture. Servant leadership is more effective in teams with highly interdependent tasks and a low-power-distance culture. Servant leadership has limitations in crisis situations and teams with incompetent members. Implementing servant leadership requires alignment between the leader’s values and this philosophy.
