Abstract

This research examines effective strategies for developing local products to compete in modern retail markets and identifies factors determining success or failure. Synthesis of literature from agricultural economics, value chain analysis, and development studies reveals that successful development strategies include quality and safety standard upgrading, packaging and labeling improvement, producer group or cooperative formation, collective branding based on geographical identity, and strategic partnerships with modern retailers. Success is determined by supporting infrastructure availability, appropriate financing access, consistent government policy support, local producer managerial capacity, product characteristics with natural advantages, strong social networks and relationships, and skilled labor availability. Competition from imported products constitutes a significant constraining factor. Without systematic approaches addressing these factors, local product development initiatives risk failure or produce only temporary impact.
